UT - Austin : Pharmacy : UTSSHPService Members and co-chairs coordinate community service events and develop new service projects. UTSSHP service projects include: Brown Bag: UTSSHP members go to assisted living facilities, such as Westminster Manor, to provide the residents opportunities to ask any questions they may have regarding their prescription, OTC, and herbal medications. Working in pairs, pharmacy students answer their questions under the guidance of registered pharmacists. Reference books can be used to answer questions, and the residents are directed to follow up with their doctor before they change their current regimen. This is a great opportunity for UTSSHP members to practice patient counseling and communication skills. Our next event is on April 23.

Neurodegenerative diseases are progressive diseases of the nervous system involving damage to or loss of neurons in the brain and/or spinal cord, which can occur at any time of life. Degenerative processes can be insidious and very protracted (e.g., most forms of multiple sclerosis) or can be very rapid (certain forms of Alzheimer's disease). They may involve loss of intellectual and cognitive functioning, memory, planning and coordinating information, in which case they are called dementias. The most common neurodegenerative diseases are Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis. Typically, neurodegenerative diseases that occur early in life (e.g., in early childhood) are not called dementias but instead are considered forms of mental retardation, such as Heller's syndrome (a form of autism) or Hurler's syndrome.
