Symptoms Of Multiple Sclerosis~what are the signs, and cognitive disabilities of MS?
The first signs of multiple sclerosis (MS) usually appear between the ages of 20 and 50, though the disease can strike children and the elderly.
Early symptoms of MS are Difficult to Identify.
The most common early symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis are:
~ Balance and problems with equilibrium ( dizziness, tremor, vertigo)
~ Bowel and Bladder problems ( urgency, constipation, incontinence)
~ Mood swings, depression etc. ( behavioral changes)
~ Cognitive dysfunction ( loss of memory, reasoning and concentration)
~ Facial numbness
~ Motor dysfunction ( muscle weakness and spasm)
~ Sexual dysfunction
~ Vision problems ( double vision, loss of vision in one eye)
Obviously these are not all of the symptoms and cognitive dysfunctions of this dibilitating disease but they are very important signs to be aware of.
In some people who show early-warning signs of MS, the drug interferon-beta-1a seems to delay or even prevent the disease from becoming full-blown.
Interferon
Interferons show promise in secondary progressive MS, but more data is needed to support widespread use.
Interferon beta-1b (Betaseron) and interferon beta-1a (Avonex) are approved for the treatment of multiple sclerosis.
Interferon alfa-2b (Intron-A) may remain at room temperature 30-35C (86-95F) for 7-14 days before mixing, and pegylated interferon alfa-2b may remain at room temperature 15-30C (59-86F) before mixing.
Side effects of interferon beta therapy
~ Pain
~ Swelling or redness at injection site
~ Flu-like symptoms (headache, fever, chills, fatigue, muscle aches)
Many people with MS experience fatigue and need to rest and sleep during the day in order to continue their activities. The degree of fatigue may not be related to the severity of other symptoms.
Although there’s still no cure, knowing the early symptoms of MS and how it impacts the body helps the individual and their family better prepare for this disease.
As with any disease or questions regarding symptoms or medications, be sure to contact your physician.
